Apache Indians
In the 1800's when the white people were settling the West there were big problems
in southeast Arizona with the Apache Indians. At one time there was an ambush where
most of the men were killed, including this woman's husband. A couple of men that
managed to come back alive said the Apaches were on their way. The woman was terrified,
especially for her three young children and the prospect that they would be tortured or
raped. So she took all three of them to the Gila River and drowned them. Afterwards
she went back to town to wait for the Apaches to come, but they never attacked, and the
woman went crazy. She spent the rest of her life walking up and down the Gila where
she killed her kids. Lots of people even now still see her and hear her crying at night.
There's a bridge near the spot where they say she killed them. It's really spooky,
especially at night.
